TYPES OF PROCEDURES

Dr. Bitan is a leading expert in both traditional and minimally invasive back surgery and has performed more than5,000 adult and pediatric spine surgeries. His patients travel from around the world to benefit from his unique high-touch, high-tech approach. Dr. Bitan treats every patient like family--with respect and with the most up-to-date surgical techniques available anywhere.

Minimally invasive spine surgery

Dr. Bitan is a world leader in minimally invasive spine surgery techniques. He meets with every patient individually to determine which kind of surgery will help them the most.

  • XLIF - Extreme lateral interbody fusion (XLIF) is a minimally invasive procedure performed through the side of the body to treat spinal disorders and reduce long-term back or leg pain that has not responded to other treatments, such as steroid injections, physical therapy and pain medication.

  • Endoscopic spine surgery - Using special instrumentation and video cameras, Dr. Bitan performs disc surgery through extremely small incisions (about the diameter of a penny). This procedure minimizes damage to muscles and tissue and may result in a faster recovery. This minimally invasive spine surgery is used to relieve pain caused by herniated discs pressing on nerve roots.

Artificial Disc Replacement (Lumbar and Cervical)

Dr. Bitan is a pioneer in artificial disc replacement surgery and was the first physician to perform this procedure in the United States. He has now conducted more than 1,000 artificial disc replacement surgeries, relieving patients of chronic pain and transforming their ability to lead active lives.

For some patients with severe back pain and damaged discs, artificial disc replacement is a better long-term option that spinal fusion. Disc replacement can help prevent stress on the spine and offer better long-term mobility. It can also reduce the risk of needing a second surgery years later.

Dr. Bitan is happy to discuss whether you are a good candidate for artificial disc replacement.

Spinal Fusions

Spinal fusion is surgery to permanently connect two or more vertebrae in your spine, eliminating motion between them. Spinal fusion involves techniques designed to mimic the normal healing process of broken bones. During spinal fusion, Dr. Bitan places bone or a bonelike material within the space between two spinal vertebrae. Metal plates, screws and rods may be used to hold the vertebrae together, so they can heal into one solid unit. Learn more.

Spinal Osteotomies

Spine osteotomy is a surgical procedure in which a section of the spinal bone is cut and removed to allow for correction of spinal alignment.

Revision Spinal Surgery

Revision spine surgery is surgery performed in certain patients to correct the problems of earlier spine surgery. Revision surgery is indicated in patients with chronic pain even after surgery. Other factors indicated for revision spine surgery include: Scar tissue formation around the incision.

Sacroliac Fusions

In a fusion surgery, a bone graft and/or instruments are used to encourage bone growth over the sacroiliac joint and create one immobile unit. Joint fusion can effectively reduce pain and instability caused by sacroiliac joint dysfunction or inflammation (sacroiliitis).

Endoscopic Surgery

Dr. Bitan is a world leader in minimally invasive spine surgery techniques. He meets with every patient individually to determine which kind of surgery will help them the most.
